Halloween 2011

This post is a little late seeing how Thanksgiving is this week.

This Halloween was Calvin's first.  And sadly, Lynn was in Hawaii for work, so we had separate Halloween activities.
Looking back at the last couple years, our costumes have always been thrown together last minute by whatever we had around the house.

One year we were Lakers' fans.

Another year, I threw a glittery scarf around my head and tried to pull off being Arabian royalty.
Same year,
Lynn+black clothes+white chalk+leaves pinned to his body=wind.

I wish we had a picture of that halloween.

This year,  Calvin and I went to the ward trunk or treat.  I cheated as usual and put on a Japanese yukata (summer kimono) and calvin went as Domo.
Domo is a japanese character quickly becoming popular in america.  He started off as a mascot to NHK a japanese tv station. Not unlike the peacock for NBC.  He became so popular he now has his own TV show; but is better known here as a teenage clothing fad.

Meanwhile, Lynn was celebrating Halloween with his co-workers in Hawaii.
Angry Birds!   Lynn is a gangsta bird?
One of the girls' mom is a seamstress!  She made those costumes so they didn't have the spend $60!Amazing.

Anyway, maybe next year we'll have matching costumes and look super cute.
I've always wanted to be chun-li (from street fighter) for halloween.
But since I'm not under the age of 10, guess I'll have to think of something else.

Happy Thanksgiving! We're excited everyone's coming down to Huntington Beach this year! It'll be a party.  I am thankful for my family. -Cerise

White Men Can't Jump

It's crazy to think that 6 months ago we were here.

And now he's a little human jumping himself to sleep.

The first thing I thought of when I saw him crashed out.

Family Date to Newport Beach

Our firm got Friday off so Cerise took the day off as well to hang out as a family. I asked her what she wanted to do and she said, "Well, first we could go to Baby H&M..." When you do accounting stuff all day you kinda daydream about doing something a little more epic with your time off like driving up the coast to camp at Big Sur for the night, but Baby H&M was my second thing that came to mind. Also, if you blur your eyes a little it kinda looks like he's wearing a joke mullett wig.

Can you guess where we are based on the weirdly distressed chairs?

Cafe Rio! You probably guessed it right if you're Mormon since Cafe Rio is an amazing cafeteria style Mexican restaurant chain that started in Utah. This location is in Costa Mesa and if you've never been there make sure you go try it out. The sweet pork will blow your freaking mind.

Calvin loved watching the Seagulls. They were the first birds he'd ever seen.

Cerise loved looking at my un-looped Member's Only jacket strap and not telling me about it. Awesome.

Calvin loved watching the huge bubbles created by this really nice old guy. We didn't realize until after a few bubbles that he had a thing on the ground for money. We would have totally given him a dollar or two, but we didn't have any cash on us so we left before it got to "You guys better pay for all of these bubbles" time.

"LEFT THEN RIGHT, YOU LITTLE PANSY"

Cerise was trying to get a picture of me having Calvin burst the bubble by kicking it before it hit the ground. The camera phone is delayed so you have snap it a second before you want it to take the photo. So instead, it looks like I'm one of those football dads who is trying to force his 16 week old kid to walk so he can learn how to run and hit even sooner. Wait, it doesn't look like the football dad? Just a cute dad and balding son picture?

He loves Cerise so much. A lot of times he will just start giggling when she comes into view. At this stage of his life, she is better than me at getting him to laugh. I guess babies' senses of humor aren't really developed by 16 weeks...

I can't believe this guy is 16 weeks old. He just came out of his food coma (temporary sleep after breastfeeding) and he's grabbing my arm hair and smiling as I type with one hand. Life is awesome.

Pictures of Calvin Yoshikazu Markham

"The Kazu" is a one button baby. What we mean by this is that when he's two months old wearing something for 3 month old kids... he can fit into it as long as we just button the middle button... and then shimmy the thing past his fat roll in his elbow joint to get it off. This dude can eat.

We are trying to teach him that it's rude to take somebody else's nose and then fall asleep before giving it back, but he just still really seems to like sleeping in the "I've got your nose" position.

Even though it kinda looks like Cerise is flashing "westside" with her right hand and "crips" with her left hand... this is incidental. She is not actually in a gang anymore.

Love this guy.

I think we have a pretty good idea of what his "embarrassed of his parents in front of his friends" look might be like.

Calvin realizing that he is not eating or moving around.

He's got the double chin and receding hairline of a 40 year old man.

Coming home to this is the best thing that's happened to me since the pau gasol trade of 2008.

Love this little dude.

This little grin makes everything almost worth it...

Just kidding about the almost worth it thing. It's freaking amazing having this little guy around. Life changing in the best ways possible.

Baby Momma talks in her sleep

Cerise falls asleep as soon as she puts her head down. She is like a girl version of my cousin marcus when it comes to falling asleep. If I have to study late, she likes when I study in our bedroom because she doesn't like going to bed alone. So while I'm up late studying for midterms, finals, or CPA exams I'll hear her just start talking in her sleep. I usually just respond like what she's saying makes complete sense and then I type our conversations in a word document on my laptop. I ended up with like 7 of these word docs so I figured this would be a good place to organize them. These aren't supposed to be clever or funny, they're just things she has said in her sleep.

 “Exactly a dollar.”

“Thanks for letting us use your scripture stand.”

“I liked that email.”

Plane to Japan

“I’m just paranoid with all the alligators in my bed.”

Cerise: Does it matter with the total number of outs and steals?
Lynn: Honey, are you dreaming about baseball?
Cerise: You’re the one who told me to make sure we are praying for baseball. Geez, your prayers are so freaking long.

Train in Japan

Cerise: How much debt are you holding?
Lynn: What debt are you talking about?
Cerise: The wife of the president of the county.

"That’s a really good option. It would be nice to have all those benches. There would be one for every freeway exit. You’d walk out your front door and be like, 'Oh, here it is.'”

I knew those pets were coming.
Who told you?
Natalie.

Is there like some way that you can save a process, mark?
If at work if you could organize things into accounts because it would help save time.
Like if you could save it so like “this is what we did last time with our G7000!”

Bus in Korea. Not quite asleep.

C:  When we have the newborn and he gets his own advisers…(20 second pause)
L:  When is he getting the advisers?
C:  Well they had some old names, but it’s crazy
L:  Wait, who is getting the advisers?
C:  Just people who had old accounts
L:  So just the people with old accounts are getting advisers?
C:  Yeah, just the people who had accounts from 2005-2008.
L:  How much does it cost to get an adviser?
C:  I don’t know. I’m surprised they got advisers, it should have just come with their account.
L:  How long will they need advisors?
C:  They’re okay now. They’re just helping with the food. It’s okay.
L:  What kind of food are they helping out with?
C:  Normal food. You have to see if they have any extra food.
L:  Are the advisers like caterers?
C:  No. Essentially, the advisers are people who advise. Stop typing honey. Are you just writing what I’m saying?

Bus in Korea. Asleep.

"What’s that sound? It sounds like a T-shirt."
2/26/2011

This is similar to the kind of look she has when she says this stuff

Cerise:  At this time it was a german based insurance so it would make sense for him to be European based instead of asian.
Lynn:  so he’s German?
Cerise:  yep, except he’s Japanese
Lynn:  so what’s the deal with the insurance?
Cerise:  They don’t want to bill anything that’s like... uggh, what is wrong with you. You’re asking all these questions when you never cared before. Basically the lady couldn’t get the authorities to cover any of her expenses before, but now they’re willing to cover them until august.
Lynn:  So they’re covering her expenses until august?
Cerise:  Yeah.
Lynn:  What kind of expenses does she need covered?
Cerise:  I dunno, why? Why? (annoyed)
Lynn:  I was just wondering what kind of insurance she has.
Cerise:  The same as me.
Lynn:  I love you honey.
Cerise:  I love you too. You’re just asking so many hard questions.

Baby Pictures

We created a little human! We are really stoked to finally have him around. His name is Calvin Yoshikazu Markham.

Cerise was in labor for 15 hours in total. She was dilated to 10 cm's, but his head was 13.5 cm's. He came out RIGHT after the doctor performed the episiotomy.

Labor and delivery went pretty well. The umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck twice, but the doctor took care of it very smoothly. I never had to worry about it because the problem was solved before I even had time to realize there was a problem.

Live birth. You can't unsee that.

Doesn't he kinda look like a quarter asian baby version of Russell Westbrook in this picture? Yeah? No? Okay.

He was waaaay bigger looking than we expected! I still can't believe our little monster could fit in cerise's stomach. So crazy. 8 pounds 6 ounces. 21 inches long.

I think this picture just about sums up the difference between motherhood and grandmotherhood.

Gramma Markham!

Greg vying for favorite uncle... since I can't be the favorite uncle to my own kid. We'll see how it goes.

One day after the miracle of birth. Total babe.

There is no such thing as privacy for moms in the hospital. One of the nurses was talking to Cerise before we left and she looked down and said, "You have OODLES of milk in there!"  She then squeezed Cerise until milk started coming out.

It feels sooooo natural having Calvin around. It's like there's another person joining the markham party.

First night home

Obaa-chan (Gramma Buck) came for almost a week and helped out with Calvin. She made some awesome meals and dominated the laundry and cleaning.

Obaachan!

So stoked to finally have my little guy

Calvin likes lying on the bed between us and listening to us talk. Sometimes he will cry until we lay him down by us and then he will just relax.

Calvin's first gift from Uncle Sam. No, really, a gift from Cerise's younger brother Samuel on a mission in Japan.

This is when we came to the awesome realization that half of his crib can be used for baby stuff storage/changing station for a while.

When Cerise looks at Calvin after feeding him and says, "Do you want me to burp you or do you want daddy to burp you?" ... this is usually code for "Lynn, burp him."

Grampa Markham

Feed, burp, change diaper, sleep, practice dribbling through his legs, repeat.
